Telehealth
Telehealth is defined as "the remote monitoring of patient’s vital signs in the home to support the medical diagnosis, assessment and management of their condition".

It is important because it can allow for the early discharge of patients from an acute setting such as a hospital or even avoidance of hospitalization. This ultimately results in the freeing up of much needed acute beds and could imply cost savings.

The development of Telehealth has occurred during a period of great change of current trends and policies in healthcare. Hospital resources are failing to keep up with demand, with a shift from secondary care driven services to Primary care driven services.

People are also being encouraged to participate more actively in their own healthcare management especially those with chronic, long-term conditions.

The Telehealth service comprises 3 separate elements;

  1. The Telehealth monitor which allows patients to take their own vital signs readings
  2. A patient record database and monitoring system which is located at a 24 hour staffed monitoring centre
  3. The clinical workstation used by the patient’s doctor or nurse to review the results of the readings
